The word Chongkham literally means ‘place of gold’ in Khampti language. The place is known as Capital of Khampti culture in Arunachal Pradesh. It is a circle headquarters situated at a distance of 30 kms from Tezu, the district headquarters and 40 kms from Namsai, the sub-divisional headquarters. The place is connected by all weather road to the nearest rail head at Tinsukiya ( 90 kms ) and nearest airport at Dibrugarh (130 kms ) . In fact the drive from the Tinsukiya / Dibrugarh to Chongkham through deep Tengapani forest and rice fields, itself is one of the most memorable. There are many beautiful Buddhist temple including the World Peace Pagoda in and around Chongkham.
